REDUCING THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING A LONG LABOR

What is it? 

Prodromal labor is sometimes called Latent Phase, False Labor, Pre Labor, Long Long Labor or Early Labor. The hallmark is having contractions that do not establish a consistent pattern, create significant cervical change or move into active labor. The contractions may get going and then subside, creating a stop and go experience. It can be caused by many things; hormonal imbalance, baby’s position, lack of physical stamina, lack of education/understanding about what is going on with your body, nutritional deficiency, dehydration, failed induction (using natural or medical means), starting the labor clock too early also and for unknown reasons.

What is the problem?

First time moms are at the greatest risk of having a long labor (prodromal labor). Long labors can lead to mental exhaustion, physical fatigue, maternal exhaustion and possible transport to the hospital for pain relief, I.V hydration and possible c-section.

PREVENTION STRATEGY

  • Get at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly and walk, walk, walk, at least a mile, daily
  • Do 3 sets of cat-cow exercises daily. 
  • Have a chiropractic adjustment at least 1-3 times per month
  • Begin using a supportive maternity band at 34 weeks of pregnancy
  • Orgasm at least 3x per week (daily is optimal)
  • Get a least 15 minutes of outdoor time, daily
  • Take a salt bath (1 1/2 c Epsom salt, 1 cup sea salt, 1/4 c baking soda) 3-7 times a week
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink 1/2 your weight in ounces of fluids every day
  • Have a serving of yogurt, kefir, pickles, kim chi, sauerkraut, tempeh, miso or soy, daily
  • Eat sea vegetables or take a blue green algae supplement daily (Nori, kelp, spirulina)
  • Eat a fruit or vegetable high in Vit. C daily
  • Eat a serving of dark, leafy greens daily 
  • Work up to taking 2 ounces of “mothered” apple cider vinegar daily. Dilute as needed.
  • After 16wks, drink 4 cups of pregnancy tea, daily
  • Begin taking a supplement called “5W” beginning at 34 weeks
  • If not allergic to bees or pineapple, have plenty of fresh pineapple after 34wks of pregnancy
  • Take a magnesium, zinc, and Vit. D3 (spray, no artificial colors or ingredients) supplement daily
  • Take a camu-camu supplement 
  • Take a probiotic daily
  • Avoid toxic shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes, deodorants and other body products
  • Avoid toxic household cleaners
  • Avoid artificial fragrances in perfume, air fresheners, candles, dryer sheets, laundry soap
  • Educate yourself, learn how to manage the discomforts of early labor
  • Don't get too excited about early labor, beginning to watch the clock too early can lead to mental exhaustion. Distract yourself. 
  • Bathe under the full moon, every month
  • Smell your partners fragrance- deodorant- antiperspirant-free underarms a few times a week.
  • Read, read, read- borrow books and DVD’s from our extensive library
  • Begin acupuncture treatments at 34 weeks
  • After 34wks, nap as frequently as possible
  • Attend all of our classes
  • Avoid white flower and white sugar
