What is it?

Prodromal labor is sometimes called Latent Phase, False Labor, Pre Labor, Long Long Labor or Early Labor. The hallmark is having contractions that do not establish a consistent pattern, create significant cervical change or move into active labor. The contractions may get going and then subside, creating a stop and go experience. It can be caused by many things; hormonal imbalance, baby’s position, lack of physical stamina, lack of education/understanding about what is going on with your body, nutritional deficiency, dehydration, failed induction (using natural or medical means), starting the labor clock too early and also for unknown reasons.

What is the problem?

First time moms are at the greatest risk of having a long labor (prodromal labor). Long labors can lead to mental exhaustion, physical fatigue, and maternal exhaustion.  Transport to the hospital for pain relief, I.V. hydration, and c-section is possible.
